๐Ÿ’ก Tips & Tricks: Understanding Perspective

๐ŸŽฏ Setting vanishing points correctly

Vanishing point perspective requires a horizon line and at least one vanishing point placed on it. All receding lines of an object converge toward this point. This applies to buildings, streets, interiors, and many everyday subjects.
  • 1-Point Perspective: One vanishing point on the horizon โ€“ ideal for streets, hallways, and central lines of sight.
  • 2-Point Perspective: Two vanishing points โ€“ great for building corners and objects placed at an angle to the viewer.
  • 3-Point Perspective: An additional vanishing point above or below โ€“ for dramatic worm's-eye or bird's-eye views, e.g. skyscrapers.

๐Ÿ‘ Viewer perspective as a stylistic device

There are 7 distinct perspectives, from top-down (top shot) through eye level to worm's-eye view. Eye level feels everyday and rather static โ€“ a deliberate switch to bird's-eye or worm's-eye view creates tension. Worm's-eye view makes objects appear powerful and towering, while bird's-eye view makes them appear smaller and more manageable.

Tip: Use the Viewfinder above to deliberately search for unusual angles in your photos!

๐Ÿ“ Spatial Drawing: 12 Characteristics

Spatial drawing relies not only on perspective, but also on shading, overlapping, size relationships, and diminishing detail. Parallel lines receding into depth converge toward a vanishing point. Color and brightness contrasts diminish with increasing distance (atmospheric perspective).

โŠž Image Composition: Rule of Thirds & Golden Ratio

The most important element of an image should not be placed in the center, but about one third from the edge โ€“ this is the core of the rule of thirds and resembles the golden ratio. Diagonals guide the eye and create dynamism. Asymmetry appears more vibrant than symmetry. When lines converge toward a vanishing point in parallel, additional tension and a sense of space are created.

Viewfinder โ€“ Help

Find strong motifs in photos and analyze perspective & composition.

Viewfinder

The movable frame helps isolate sections of the image. Drag corners and edges. Dimming highlights the chosen area.

Vanishing Points

Place up to 3 vanishing points by clicking "+ Vanishing Point" or use presets. Drag points directly on the image. Guide lines show the perspective.

Composition

Thirds grid, diagonals, center lines, and proportion grid assist with image composition.
